Take the One Second Intelligence Test

Cranial capacity refers to the volume of the skull, which directly correlates with brain size. As human ancestors evolved, their cranial capacity gradually increased, providing space for the brain to grow while maintaining structural integrity. The development of the human skull—especially the enlargement of the cranial vault—allowed for an expanded brain that could support more complex cognitive functions.

The head phantom includes a synthetic skull, cervical vertebrae (C1-C7), brain and arteries, along with arteries with contrast medium embedded in the left half of the head. Fluid intelligence is the capacity to think creatively and solve problems in novel situations, independent of specific acquired knowledge. Fluid intelligence involves the ability to use analytic logic along with implicit knowledge by identifying seemingly unrelated patterns and connecting the dots in new and useful ways. In this programme we’ll also be asking why we see the results we do, and will delve into the latest science on intelligence and the brain. Your individual results will also be contributing to important scientific research, helping scientists at the Department of Brain Sciences at Imperial College, London, to understand how our changing behavior and lifestyle is affecting our intelligence. When it comes to measuring intelligence, there are lots of skills that come into play – from problem solving and spatial ability, to emotional awareness and working memory.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)The original name, going back over a hundred years, was ‘hyperkinetic impulse disorder’, and for a while was Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). In the late 1980s, the hyperactivity, from the original hyperkinetic (frantic movements) observations, was added, and the condition became ADHD. The signs of ADHD include difficulty staying focused, and being forgetful, careless, disorganised, impatient, irresponsible, impulsive and inconsiderate.

Others will assert it’s misleading–even dangerous—to suggest that you can assess intelligence –at least sort of–through a one second test. Dr Hannah Fry and I will be presenting the overall results of our test in a special episode of Horizon which will be broadcast on BBC2. With intellectual disabilities, the measure is against a person with typical intellect, which is measured with a test called the Intelligence Quotient (IQ). It is increasingly widely accepted that IQ is just one of many important measures of a person’s abilities, and does not include areas like social skills which are needed for development. Sometimes the term Intellectual Disability is used to mean a wider range of difficulties. Broader terms like Developmental Delay (above) may be used instead of Intellectual Disability. While brain size is important, it is also essential to consider how the brain is protected. The skull provides essential protection from physical trauma, ensuring the brain can function effectively without risk of injury.

ADHD can affect learning and social relationships.There are different assessments for ADHD, and for the diagnosis to be confirmed the difficulties must be ongoing, usually from childhood. If the person has a developmental disorder, or is simply having a difficult time, or has other conditions that could explain the difficulties, then they may not meet the criteria for ADHD.What about CVI? This does not mean that everyone with ADHD has CVI, but some will, and we think it is worth checking. Many of the suggestions for CVI, like reducing crowding and complexity, slowing things down, building memories and ensuring emotional and physical wellbeing, will help a person with ADHD behaviours caused by CVI. If the behaviours are not caused by CVI, the suggestions certainly won’t harm, and could still help.
